Distributed Listening

October 2023 - September 2024

Deep listening with a feedback system between cello, computer system, and the space

A research project with collaborator Francesco Corvi, exploring new paradigms to relate to sound hopes to change the embodied way we approach the instruments we use to create sounds.

The project was presented at the 2024 NIME Conference in Utrecht. The following is the submitted description:

“Distributed Listening” is a music performance dealing with the concepts of distributed agency machine listening and adaptive sound processing. The focus of the project is the exploration of a miscellaneous technological apparatus where digital and electroacoustic instruments are situated in the same environment sharing data in the form of audio signals and descriptors. Particular relevance is given to how this shapes the functioning of each instrument: as a mediator between performers as a semi-autonomous agent able to exhibit adaptive behaviors and react to the incoming data and on its ability to influence the rest of the system.
